PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the students should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. identify cultural similarities among Nigerians.

2. identify cultural differences among Nigerians.

3. mention some shared norms and values of Nigerian communities.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Motion pictures of cultures

2. Pictures of cultural of cultural display

3. Regalia.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

MEANING OF CULTURE

Culture is the total ways of life. These ways of life include – language, food, dressing, arts and crafts, etc.

 

CULTURAL SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES IN NIGERIA 

There are similarities and differences in the cultural practices of the Nigeria people. The following are some of the similar cultural practices of the people of Nigeria.

1. Political system – Oba’s, Obi’s, Eze’s, Emir’s, and the Obong’s.

2. Family system – Extended family is a common feature of all cultures in Nigeria.

3. Respect for elders

4. Food and dressing

5. Marriage

6. Music and Dance

7. Craft

8. Technology, etc.

 

 

SHARED NORMS AND VALUES OF NIGERIAN COMMUNITIES 

Norms refers to behaviour and attitudes which are considered normal, while values are those things that people consider important to them.

Norms and values are the acceptable standard of behaviour or a way of behaving or of doing things that most people in the community agrees with. Some of the norms and values that are generally acceptable include –

1. Honesty

2. Integrity

3. Truth

4. Obedience

5. Loyalty

6. Kindness

7. Purity or chastity, etc.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions;

2. Guides students to identify variety of cultural traits among the different Nigerian cultures in order to identify their similarities.

Student’s Activities – Participate in the identification of the variety of cultures to get the similarities.

3. Leads students to identify cultural differences among Nigerians.

Student’s Activities – Identify differences in the cultures of Nigerians.

4. Sets students on inquiry session to find out from the community areas some of the norms and values shared by Nigerian ethnic groups.

Student’s Activities – Participate in the inquiry session and reports their findings to the class for further discussion.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

Students to:

1. identify the similarities among the cultural groups around your locality.

2. identify the differences among the cultural ethnic groups around your locality.

3. mention some shared norms and values of Nigerian communities.
