  • Christian Religion
  • Islamic Religion
  • Tradition Religion

CHRISTIAN RELIGION

Christian Religion believes in the supreme being called God and His begotten son, Jesus Christ. They worship in the church on Sunday and uses the Holy Bible to pray.

Christians celebrate Christmas to remember when Jesus Christ was born. They celebrate Easter to remember when Jesus rose from the dead. A Christian man is expected to marry only one wife.

Christians sometimes go on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Christianity was brought into Nigeria from Western countries.

ISLAMIC RELIGION

Islamic Religion belief in Allah and prophet Mohammed as the messenger of Allah. They pray five times a day, worship in the mosque and uses the Holy Qur’an and Islamic rosary (tesbih).

Their major worship day is Friday. Muslims fast for thirty days during Ramadan. Muslims go on pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslim man is allowed to marry up to four wives if he can love them equally.

Like Christianity, Islam was also brought into Nigerian from other countries.

TRADITIONAL RELIGION

Traditional religions actually started in our traditional or ancient communities, and they were introduced by the founders of such communities.

Believers in traditional religions worship God, mostly through lesser gods and goddesses. These gods and goddesses are regarded as servants of God.

Examples of such gods and goddesses in Nigeria include:

  1. Amadioha, the god of thunder among the Igbo.
  2. Ogun, the god of iron among the Yoruba.
  3. Olokun, the water goddess among the Edo.

Believers of traditional religions worship at places called shrines. They believe that their gods and goddesses live in objects. Some materials with which the people serve their gods and goddesses are palm oil, cowries, kola nuts, goats, native chalk and pieces of white cloth.

The priest tells the worshippers what to do and on which days to worship.
