CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Artwork is a a visual and non visual presentation of feelings (thoughts) or imagination through drawing, painting, music, drama, literature, dance, etc. Art is the ability to create something beautiful for our use.

 

NIGERIAN ARTWORKS

The most famous Nigerian Artworks are as follows:

1. Nok Art

2. Benin Art

3. Ife Art

4. Igbo Ukwu Art

 

 

NOK ARTWORKS 

NOK art is a art which provides evidence of the earliest ancient civilization of Nigeria.

Nok art is named after the city, Nok in the present Kaduna State where the first finds or objects or cultural artifacts were excavated by archaeologists in 1929. They are the earliest African sculpture that are usually made of clay.

 

BENIN ARTWORKS 

Benin artworks originated from the Benin kingdom generally called the Edo empire. They can also be called court art. The Benin arts are made of brass and bronze.

They are a group of sculptures which include elaborately decorated cast plaques, commemorative heads, animal and human figures, items of royal regalia, and personal ornaments.

 

 

IFE ARTWORKS 

Ife is an artistic movement of the realist type, named after a city in Nigeria, established in the 15th century by the Yoruba. It was the centre of the Forest State, west of the Niger Delta.

The works of this artistic movement are numerous; terracotta or bronze made using the lost wax technique. Ife art describes gods and kings. They are the most naturalistic of all the arts.

 

IGBO UKWU ARTWORKS 

Igbo-ukwu art is regarded as the second phase of art development in Nigeria. Igbo-ukwu is a small town; about 25 miles south-east of Onitsha in Anambra state. They reveal not only a high artistic tradition but also a well-structured.

Some famous products from the igbo ukwu discovery are the bronze roped pot and the shell and leopard vessel. Others are bronze snail shell, decorative bronze bowl and the human face pendant.

 

 

LESSON 2 – CLASSIFICATION OF ARTWORKS 

There are different branches of arts. The different art forms are painting, sculpture, textile, ceramic and graphic.

1. Painting is the art of colouring. It is applying color to an object.

2. Sculpture is the art of making beautiful using wood, clay, metal, stone, etc. Examples are baskets, chairs, tables, pots, images, etc.

3. Textile is the art of making and designing of clothes. We use flowers and plants to make beautiful patterns on clothes.

4. Ceramics is also called pottery. It is the art of moulding with clay. We mould plates, tea cups, saucer and pots from clay.

5. GRAPHICS is the art of drawing and designing of objects on the paper or in a computer. Examples are birthday card or calendar.

 

IMPORTANCE/USES OF ARTWORKS 

Art is created serve many purposes, among these are:

1. It is used for communication.

2. It is used for expressing one’s feelings.

3. It is used for decoration and beautification.

4. It is used for commemoration.

5. It is used for keeping records of important events, history and culture.

6. It used for worship and ritual.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays sample of artwork or chart showing drawings or artwork.

4. Teacher lets the groups or pairs examine and describe the samples or chart.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and describe artworks in their communities.

5. Teacher uses the samples or chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson and leads a discussion on the meaning and origin of art.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of art.

6. Teacher displays a chart showing, a child sleeping on the bed, a teacher who is teaching, a child reading his/her book, and a child on his knee praying.

7. Teacher asks pupils to identify each activity on the chart and uses their responses to introduce and discuss the uses of art.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils appreciate and analyze the importance of art in their communities.

8. Teacher displays samples or chart of Nigerian artworks and lets pupils identify and describe each type of artwork.

9. Teacher leads a discussion on the Nigerian Artworks.

10. Teacher displays chart showing different types of artworks and lets pupils identify and differentiate between them.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils describe different types of artworks in their communities and Nigeria.

11. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
