LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of dance.

2. state the materials used for traditional dance.

3. performance a short traditional dance.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOURS

The pupils can demonstrate some traditional dance steps.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of music player, chart showing people dancing.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING 

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Everybody can dance even when you think you are not. Dance can be as simple as shaking or moving your body.

Dance is the movement of the body that match the musical rhythm.

 

MEANING OF TRADITIONAL DANCES 

Traditional dance is a local dance with local music or musical instruments and beliefs. It is mostly involve waist twisting, clapping, bending the back and the knees, shaking the head along with the hands and legs.

 

TRADITIONAL DANCE STEPS 

Dancing steps are common around the world as well as in Nigeria. Here are common dancing steps in Nigeria,

1. Twisting of the waist

2. Bent knees

3. Flat foot

4.Tilting of trunk

5. Isolation of body part

6. Acrobatic step

7. Expressive movement

8. Shaking of the body

 

 

LESSON 3 – MATERIALS USED FOR TRADITIONAL DANCES IN NIGERIA 

Materials used in traditional dances including instrumental materials and other materials such as

1. Costume or uniform made from fabric or animal skins.

2. Neck, arm, leg and waist beads

3. Irukere (horse tail)

4. Sticks and wooden weapons such as cutlass, bow and arrow, shade, etc.

5. Animal horn

6. Carved image

7. Pomade

8. Hand fan

9. Ribbons made of cotton or silk

10. Handkerchiefs made of cotton or silk

11. Musical instruments

 

PRACTICE AND  PERFORMANCE 

Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class to practice and perform basic dance movements.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays chart showing people dancing or play a short dance moves for the pupils to identify and describe traditional dance.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and describe the meaning of dance.

4. Teacher uses the chart and pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a discussion on the meaning and materials used for traditional dance.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction and participate actively in the class discussion.

5. Teacher groups the pupils according to their cultural background to demonstrate some of their traditional steps or moves.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils as group demonstrate their traditional dance.

6. Teacher organizes traditional dance training and dancing competition among the pupils as groups and individually.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils take part in the dancing class and competition.

7. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
