LEARNING AREA

1. Identify Number of Objects in a Group or Collection

2. Count Correctly up to 5

3. Reading of Number 1 – 5

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. identify number of objects in a group or collection.

2. count correctly up to 5.

3. Read of Number 1 – 5.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Counting and reading of numbers.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of counters such as

1. stones

2. beans

3. bottle tops

4. buttons, leaves

5. nylon bags

6. number cards, etc.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES 

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Displays sample of the following objects (Pencils , Biro, Books, Ruler and Bottle tops) for the pupils to identify by name and note the objects on the board or card as identified by the pupils.

 

OBJECTS IDENTIFIED 

1. Pencil

2. Biro

4. Ruler

5. Key

 

 

GROUPING OBJECTS 

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Displays certain objects identified for pupils to count and identify the number of objects from 1 – 5.

For example,

Pencil – ✏️

Books – 📘📘📘

Biro – 🖊️🖊️🖊️🖊️

Rulers – 📏📏

Keys – 🔑🔑🔑🔑🔑

 

Asks pupils count and tell you the number of each object, make sure you note the number of objects on the board as follows –

1 pencil

3 books

4 biro

2 rulers

5 keys

 

Lets the pupils arrange the objects from the smallest to the highest and read as –

1 pencil, 2 rulers, 3 books, 4 biro and 5 keys.

LESSON TWO – READING OF NUMBERS 

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Guides the pupils to recognise the characters of some objects in term of numbers and read.

For example,

Class teacher’s chair has how many legs?         ________

How many fingers did your right hand have?     ________

We have how many eyes?                                      ________

Fan has how many hands?                                    ________

How many waste bin is in the class?                   ________

 

Asks them to read as recognized from the least number to the highest –

1 waste bin

2 eyes

3 hands (fan)

4 legs (chair)

5 fingers

 

 

READING FLASH CARD NUMBERS 

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Displays flash card numbers from 1 – 5 for pupils to identify and read repeatedly.

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Asks pupils to identify and count the number of objects.

3. Leads pupils to read the number of objects aloud.

Pupil’s Activities – Read the number of objects.

4. Teachers/Pupil’s Activities – Lesson evaluation.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
  • Next Lesson – Sorting and Classifying Objects leading to Idea of 1-5
