LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. Explain the meaning of articles.

2. Identify definite and indefinite articles.

3. Differentiate between definite and indefinite articles.

4. Use articles correctly in sentences.

5. Construct sentences using a, an, and the.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils already know naming words (nouns). This lesson helps them use articles correctly before nouns.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Articles are special words placed before nouns to show whether we are talking about a particular person, animal, place, or thing, or any person, animal, place, or thing in general. That’s, they used before nouns to show whether the noun is specific or general.

There are two types of articles:

  • Definite Article – the
  • Indefinite Articles – a and an

DEFINITE ARTICLE (The)

The definite article is “the.” The article the is used to refer to a particular person, animal, place, or thing.

Examples

  • The boy is my friend.
  • The book on the table is mine.
  • The teacher is in the class.

We use the when talking about a specific or particular person, animal, place, or thing.  

INDEFINITE ARTICLES (A and An)

The indefinite articles are “a” and “an.” The articles a and an are used when referring to any person, animal, place, or thing in general.

1. Use of “A”

A is used before words beginning with a consonant sound.

Examples

  • A boy is playing.
  • A pen is on the desk.
  • A dog is barking.

2. Use of “An”

An is used before words beginning with a vowel sound.

Examples

  • An apple is on the table.
  • An egg is in the basket.
  • An orange is sweet.

We use a and an when talking about a person, animal, place, or thing in general. 

Examples in Sentences

  • A girl is singing.
  • An elephant is big.
  • The girl is my sister.
  • A car is parked outside.
  • An umbrella is on the chair.
  • The car belongs to my father.
  • A teacher entered the classroom.
  • An owl sat on the tree.
  • The owl flew away.
  • A book is on the table.

SUMMARY

Pupils learned that a and an are indefinite articles used for general nouns, while the is a definite article used for specific nouns.
