Correct Sitting Posture for Keyboarding
Good sitting posture at your workstation means your shoulders are relaxed, your feet are flat on the floor, and you can sit up straight to do your work such as,
1. A chair that helps you keep your normal spinal curvature. For example, the chair must be –
- adjustable,
- supports your lower back,
- allow your elbows to stay close to your sides, and
- rolls on five wheels for easy movement without tipping.
2. A computer keyboard and keyboard tray that allow comfortable typing or keying. For example,
- allows your elbows to be bent about 90 degrees and close to your sides,
- supports to help keep your wrists in a neutral, almost straight position, and
- the tilt of the keyboard can be adjusted.

Parts of the Computer Keyboard and their Uses
1. ALPHABETIC KEYS
Alphabetic keys are the keys on the computer keyboard with the alphabetical letters from A – Z.
Alphabetic keys are used for typing letters and sentences.
2. NUMERIC KEYS
Numeric keys are the keys on the computer keyboard with the numbers from 0 – 9.
Numeric keys are used for writing numbers.
3. SPECIAL CHARACTER KEYS
Special character keys are keys on the computer keyboard with the @ # $ & ( ) { } / \ * – . , ? ” ‘ _ – ! : ; etc.
Special Character keys are used in sentences and numbers.
4. FUNCTION KEYS
Functions keys are the keys on the computer keyboard with f1, f2, f3, f4, f5, f6, f7, f8, f9, f10, f12, and f12.
Function keys as used as follows:
- F1, Help and Support
- F2, Rename a selected object
- F3, Find or Opens search box in browsers
- Alt+F4, Close open windows and tabs
- F5, Refresh or Updates the active Window. Useful to refresh a displayed page in a browser
- F6, Select the address bar
- F7, Spell and grammar check
- F8, Starts Windows in safe mode
- F9, Updates fields
- F11, Full screen mode
- F10, Activates menu bar options
- F11, Toggles between full screen and normal display in browsers
- F12, Save as
Similarities between a the Typewriter and Computer Keyboard
The similarities between typewriter and computer keyboard are as follows:
1. both are input devices.
2. both are used to produce data.
3. both are used for typing documents.

The Keyboard Rows
1. Top Row Keys
The top row keys include the Q W E R T keys for the left hand and Y U I O P keys for the right hand.
2. Upper Row Keys
The upper row keys are the number 0 – 9 and all the special characters.
3. Home Row Keys
The home keys are A S D F for the the left hand and G H J ; keys for the right hand while the thumbs rest on the spacebar.
By positioning your hands correctly on the home row keys, you can memorize where all other keys on the keyboard are located.
4. Bottom Row Keys
The bottom row keys are the Z X C V and B keys for the left hand and N M comma, period, and forward slash keys for the right hand.
