SUMMARY
In this lesson, pupils learned that the environment is everything around us, including living and non-living things such as people, animals, plants, air, water, land, buildings, and roads.
Pupils identified materials found in the environment and classified them into natural materials (such as trees, soil, rocks, sand, water, and animals) and man-made materials (such as buildings, roads, chairs, plastic containers, bottles, and vehicles).
Furthermore, pupils learned ways of caring for the environment, including sweeping the surroundings, disposing of refuse properly, planting trees, avoiding bush burning, keeping drains clean, recycling reusable materials, and protecting plants and animals.
Finally, pupils understood that caring for the environment helps to keep the surroundings clean, prevent diseases, reduce pollution, protect natural resources, preserve plants and animals, and promote healthy living.

Pupils’ Activities: Pupils explain the meaning of the environment in their own words.
Step 3: Materials Found in the Environment – The teacher explains the two groups of materials found in the environment:
- Natural materials (e.g., trees, soil, rocks, sand, water, air, animals)
- Man-made materials (e.g., buildings, roads, chairs, plastic containers, bottles, vehicles)
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils identify and classify materials in the classroom and school environment as natural or man-made.
Step 4: Ways of Caring for the Environment – The teacher discusses ways of caring for the environment, such as sweeping the surroundings, disposing of refuse properly, planting trees, keeping drains clean, recycling materials, and avoiding bush burning.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils suggest ways they help to keep their homes and school environment clean.
Step 5: Practical Activity – The teacher demonstrates proper environmental sanitation by sweeping the classroom, picking litter, and disposing of waste in a waste bin.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils participate in cleaning the classroom or school surroundings and disposing of waste properly.
Step 6: Group Activity – The teacher divides the class into four groups and assigns the following activities:
- Group 1: Explain the meaning of the environment.
- Group 2: List natural and man-made materials found in the environment.
- Group 3: State ways of caring for the environment.
- Group 4: Explain the importance of caring for the environment.
Each group presents its work to the class.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils discuss the assigned tasks and present their findings.
Step 7: Lesson Summary – The teacher reviews the meaning of the environment, materials found in the environment, ways of caring for the environment, and the importance of environmental care.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer oral questions and summarise the lesson.
Step 8: Evaluation – The teacher asks oral and written questions to assess pupils’ understanding of the lesson.
Pupils’ Activities: Pupils answer the evaluation questions and participate actively in the lesson.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
