TOPIC: Construction with Defining Relative
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
A. Make sentences of the following patterns:
1. Let an old man who wouldn’t say his prayer.
2. Have you received the letter.
3. All is not gold that glitters.
4. This is the house that jack built.
B. Learn the poem ‘works’ while you work.
C. Make sentences, of the type in which ‘who’ and ‘which’ are omitted, e.g. The boy you punished. ‘I saw the boy you punished’. That’s, when it is the object of the verb in the defining clause, it is omitted e.g. ‘I know the problem you are solving’.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
CONSTRUCTION WITH DEFINING RELATIVE
1. Learning that a defining relative means one which describes its antecedent, e.g. Show me the boy who broke the window. ‘Who broke the window’.
2. Learning the right use of the relative words ‘who’.
3. Always say, ‘All that you do’; never say ‘All what…. ‘
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Provides sentences strips illustrating the points of the lesson;
Pupil’s Activities – Revise linking of sentences. For example – This is the girl. She took my book. We killed the snake. The snake swallowed the chicken. We killed the snake which swallowed the snakes.
3. Reminds pupils that ‘who’ is used for person, ‘which’ for animals and ‘that’ for person and things;
Pupil’s Activities – Make several sentences in the pattern with who, which, that, as relative pronouns; learn the poem: work while you work…
4. Discusses the second verse of the peom, ‘work’ while you work – all that you do, do it with your might. Things done by halves are never done right;
Pupil’s Activities – Use defining clauses without the objective case, e.g. The girl I saw as the party lives in Lagos. ‘whom’ has been omitted.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
LESSON EVALUATION
Pupils to:
1. Use appropriate pronouns in defining relative clauses;
2. Participate in oral drill.
