PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –
1. states the meaning of water contamination.
2. list various ways by which water can be contaminated.
ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
The pupils can identify fit and unfit water for any domestic or other uses.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. Charts showing ways of contaminating water.
2. Cans or cups.
3. Water from taps, gutter, stream, etc.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
Teacher’s Activities – Use samples of water of different qualities (clean and dirty) to guide pupils to identify water that is unfit for drinking (check colour and odour).
Ask them to examine the chart showing various ways of contaminating water and discuss.
Pupil’s response – Response to the teacher’s instructions and discuss.
Teacher’s remark – The dirty water is unfit for drinking because it is contaminated. There are several ways in which water can be contaminated. Today, we are going to learn the meaning of water contamination and ways of contaminating water.
Lead the pupils to define water contamination based on their discussion and note their points on the board.
MEANING OF CONTAMINATION OF WATER
Water contamination is water that are unsafe for drinking, cooking, washing, etc.
WAYS OF CONTAMINATING WATER
1. Defecating on water bodies.
2. Dumping of refuse and industrial wastes into water bodies.
3. Breaking of oil pipes near streams, riversides and farmlands.
LESSON 2 – SOURCES OF WATER CONTAMINATION
Water contamination comes from three primary sources:
1. Rainwater
2. Surface water
3. Groundwater

PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
1. Provides pupils with samples of water of different qualities (clean, dirty or muddy).
2. Uses simple activities to guide pupils to identify water that is unfit for drinking (check colour and odour).
3. Shows samples of contaminated water.
Pupil’s Activities – Observe and describe the displayed set of water samples.
4. Teacher’s/Pupil’s Discussion on source of water contamination.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
