TOPIC 1 – DEFINITION OF DANCE

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

1. Textbook/notebooks

3. Pictorials of various dances

4. CD or cassette player or drums, gong and rattle

5. Proper clothing for dance (Tights, Leotard, T shirt).

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. define dance.

2. state the uses of dance.

3. perform some dance movements.

 

 

CONTENTS OF THE LESSON

FOCUS LESSONS

1. Meaning of Dance

Dance is the movement of the body in space and time to express an idea or pass across a message.

 

2. Components of Dance 

  • Movement
  • Space
  • Time
  • Expression

 

3. Uses of Dance

  • It is used for entertainment.
  • It is used for passing important information and messages like unity, love, tolerance etc. enliven the mood of an occasion, etc.
  • It is a form of exercise.
  • It allows people to express themselves.
  • It provides physical (mental) refreshment and relaxation.

 

 

LESSON PRESENTATION

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES

The teacher,

1. defines dance.

2. explains the components of movement, space, time, expression.

3. enumerates the uses of dance with examples.

4. leads the class in a discussion on the uses of dance they have observed in their immediate environment.

5. leads the students in performing some dance movements.

 

 

STUDENT’S ACTIVITIES

The students,

1. listen to teacher’s explanation and take notes.

2. participate in the discussion on the uses of dance.

3. participate in the practical dance class.

 

 

LESSON EVALUATION

Teacher asks students to,

1. state the meaning of dance.

2. describe four uses of dance and give one example each.

3. display two dance movements/phrases that express a particular idea of emotion.

1. Meaning of Contemporary Dance

Contemporary dance is a form of dance that is a clear departure from the traditional and ballet dance forms but draws inspiration from them.

 

2. Features of Contemporary Dance

  • Individual style
  • Creativity
  • Does not have fixed movements, etc.

 

3. Performing Some Contemporary Dance Movements

 

 

LESSON PRESENTATION

TEACHER’S ACTIVITIES

1. defines and explains contemporary dance.

2. plays video of contemporary dance – Nigerian and Western.

3. leads the class in a discussion of points they have noted.

4. introduces various contemporary dance movements.

Choreographer is a theatre artist who creates, arranges dances, teaches dancers to perform a dance to the delight of an audience.
