The pupils already know that determiners are words placed before nouns. This lesson introduces demonstrative determiners, which are used to point out specific people, animals, places, or things.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Demonstrative determiners are words used before nouns to point out specific people, animals, places, or things.

The four demonstrative determiners are:

  • This
  • That
  • These
  • Those

USES AND EXAMPLES OF DEMONSTRATIVE DETERMINERS

1. This – This is used to refer to one person, animal, place, or thing that is near the speaker.

Examples:

  • This book is mine.
  • This pen belongs to me.
  • This boy is my friend.

2. That – That is used to refer to one person, animal, place, or thing that is far from the speaker.

Examples:

  • That house is beautiful.
  • That girl is my sister.
  • That tree is very tall.

3. These – These is used to refer to more than one person, animal, place, or thing that is near the speaker.

Examples:

  • These books are new.
  • These pupils are hardworking.
  • These oranges are sweet.

4. Those – Those is used to refer to more than one person, animal, place, or thing that is far from the speaker.

Examples:

  • Those boys are playing football.
  • Those houses are beautiful.
  • Those birds are flying in the sky.
