WEEK 2 –  WRITING: A PLAY

WRITING A PLAY

A play, also called drama, is a story that is acted out by people on a stage. The people in a play are called actors. They use speech, actions, gestures, and expressions to tell a story to the audience.

 

FEATURES OF A PLAY

1. Title – The name of the play

2. Characters – The people who act in the play

3. Setting/Scene – Where and when the story takes place

4. Dialogue – The words spoken by the characters

5. Stage Directions – Instructions about movements, actions, or expressions of the actors

6. Plot/Story – The events that happen in the play

7. Moral/Lesson – The message or teaching of the play

 

TIPS FOR WRITING A PLAY

1. Choose a theme – Decide what the play is about (e.g., honesty, friendship, courage)

2. Create characters – Write who will act in the play

3. Write a setting – Decide where and when the play happens

4. Write dialogues – Include what each character says

5. Add stage directions – Show what the characters do or feel

6. Include a moral – Give a lesson at the end

 

EXAMPLE (SHORT PLAY OUTLINE)

Title: The Honest Child

Characters: Tunde, Teacher, Pupils

Setting: School playground

Dialogue:

  • Teacher: “Who found this purse?”
  • Tunde: “I found it, Sir.”

Stage Direction: (Tunde raises his hand and walks forward.)

Moral: Always be honest.

 

SUMMARY
