Pupils have previously learned about the meaning of government, the types of government, and the three arms of government.

This lesson builds on that knowledge by teaching pupils the major functions of government and how these functions improve the lives of citizens.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Pupils have seen government build schools, hospitals, roads, and markets in their communities. They have also seen police officers maintaining peace and security, teachers working in public schools, and doctors treating sick people in government hospitals. These are some of the important duties performed by the government for the benefit of the people.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the major functions of government and understand why these duties are important for the welfare and development of citizens. 

MEANING OF THE FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNMENT

The functions of government are the important duties and responsibilities carried out by the government to ensure the well-being, peace, and development of the country.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNMENT

1. Making and Enforcing Laws – Government makes laws and ensures that people obey them.

2. Protecting Lives and Property – Government protects people and their property through the police, military, and other security agencies.

3. Providing Education – Government builds schools and provides teachers and learning materials for pupils.

4. Providing Healthcare – Government builds hospitals and health centres to care for sick people.

5. Providing Good Roads and Transportation – Government builds and repairs roads and bridges to make travelling easier.

6. Creating Employment – Government creates jobs so that people can work and earn a living.

7. Providing Basic Amenities – Government provides important services such as:

SUMMARY

In this lesson, pupils learned that the functions of government are the important duties and responsibilities carried out by the government for the benefit of the people.
