CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Every country needs people to make rules, maintain peace, provide services, and manage the affairs of the country. The group of people responsible for these duties is called the government.
Nigeria has a system of government in which citizens choose their leaders through elections.
In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning of government, its functions, different forms of government, and the form of government practised in Nigeria.
MEANING OF GOVERNMENT
Government is the system or group of people responsible for making and enforcing laws and managing the affairs of a country.
Government helps to maintain peace, order, security, and development in society.
FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNMENT
The government:
1. Makes and enforces laws.
2. Maintains peace and security.
3. Provides public services such as schools and hospitals.
4. Builds and maintains roads and other infrastructure.
5. Protects the rights of citizens.
6. Provides social amenities.
7. Collects taxes to provide public services.
8. Maintains relationships with other countries.
FORMS OF GOVERNMENT
There are different forms of government, including:
- Democracy – Government by the people, usually through elected representatives.
- Monarchy – Government headed by a king or queen.
- Military government – Government controlled by the military.
- Dictatorship – Government in which power is concentrated in the hands of one person or a small group.
FORMS OF GOVERNMENT PRACTISED IN NIGERIA
Nigeria practises a democratic system of government.
Nigeria is a federal republic with a presidential system of government. Citizens elect representatives to make decisions and govern on their behalf.
The Nigerian government operates at three levels:
- Federal Government – Governs the country as a whole.
- State Government – Governs each state.
- Local Government – Governs local government areas.
ARMS OF GOVERNMENT
The government also has three main arms:
- Executive – Implements and enforces laws.
- Legislature – Makes laws.
- Judiciary – Interprets laws and settles legal disputes.
IMPORTANCE OF GOVERNMENT
Government is important because it helps to:
1. Maintain peace and order.
2. Protect citizens.
3. Provide essential services.
4. Promote development.
5. Make laws and ensure that people obey them.
6. Protect the rights of citizens.

SUMMARY
