TOPIC – INDIGENOUS TECHNOLOGY, CRAFTS AND INDUSTRIES

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

Products of local craft e.g. Locally produced Beads, footwear, pottery, cloth, farm implements.

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. mention the types of indigenous technology practiced in Nigeria.

2. identify some areas where these indigenous technologies are practices.

 

 

CONTENTS OF THE LESSON

FOCUS LESSONS 

1. Types of Indigenous technology practiced in Nigeria:

  • Agriculture, e.g. shifting cultivation, mixed cropping, fishing, etc.
  • Metallurgy production of Iron, Brass, Silver, Gold, Tin Objects e.g. production of farming implements such as hoes, axe-heads, production of weapons of war, Iron traps, needles, hammers, hooks, etc.
  • Salt making
  • Pottery
  • Boat building
  • Cloth weaving
  • Leather production
  • Tie and dye
  • Bead making, etc.

2. Locations in Nigeria where these crafts are practices, e.g.

  • Leather making – Kano
  • Bead making – Bida, Ife, Benin
  • Pottery – Abuja
  • Iron – Akwa, Niger Benue confluence etc.
