CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Nigeria is a country with many ethnic groups, languages, cultures, customs, and traditions. People from these different groups interact with one another in schools, workplaces, communities, and other places.

Sometimes, a person may marry someone from a different ethnic group, while another person may marry someone from the same ethnic group. These forms of marriage can have benefits and challenges, and values such as love, respect, tolerance, understanding, and acceptance can help couples and families live peacefully.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning of intermarriage and intra-ethnic marriage, their advantages and disadvantages, and the values that foster peaceful intermarriage.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF INTERMARRIAGE

Intermarriage is a marriage between people who belong to different ethnic groups.

For example, when a Yoruba person marries an Igbo, Hausa, Efik, or another ethnic group, it is called intermarriage.

Intermarriage can help people from different ethnic groups understand and appreciate one another.

ADVANTAGES OF INTERMARRIAGE

1. It promotes unity among different ethnic groups.

2. It encourages peaceful relationships.

3. It promotes cultural understanding.

4. It reduces ethnic prejudice and discrimination.

Intra-ethnic marriage is a marriage between people who belong to the same ethnic group.

For example, when a Yoruba person marries another Yoruba person, or an Igbo person marries another Igbo person, it is an intra-ethnic marriage.

ADVANTAGES OF INTRA-ETHNIC MARRIAGE

1. Couples may understand similar cultural practices.

2. Communication may be easier when the same language is spoken.

3. Families may share similar traditions and customs.

4. Cultural practices can be easily passed on to children.

5. Families may find it easier to understand one another’s expectations.

DISADVANTAGES OF INTRA-ETHNIC MARRIAGE

1. It may limit interaction between different ethnic groups.

2. It may encourage ethnic differences if people refuse to associate with other groups.

3. It may reduce opportunities to learn about other cultures.

4. Family disagreements can still occur despite sharing the same ethnic background.

5. It does not automatically guarantee a successful marriage.
