TOPIC – INTONATION PRACTICE ON QUESTION TAGS 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. Use the intonation required in question correctly.
2. Use stress correctly to convey meaning.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Course book.
2. Sentence strips.
3. Flash cards.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

INTONATION PRACTICE ON QUESTION TAGS 

Questions Tags that are statements requesting confirmation rather than questions.

Not all tag questions are really questions. Some of them merely ask for confirmation or invite agreement, in which case we use a falling tone at the end.

• She thinks he’s so clever, doesn’t ↘she?
• He’s such a nuisance, isn’t ↘he?
• I failed the exam because I didn’t revise, did ↘ I?
• It doesn’t seem to bother her much, does ↘ it?

PRESENTATION

• To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Introduces the lesson by showing the chart to pupils and guiding them to read the sentences.
3. Pupil’s Activities – Repeat after the teacher, three or four times, the intonation pattern provided by the teacher, e.g. will you do the sums accurately?
4. Supervises pupils to practice rising intonation.
5. Pupil’s Activities – Practice the falling/rising intonation of a question.

CONCLUSION

• To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION 

Pupils to:

1. Use the appropriate stress and intonation in given sentences.
2. Use stress and intonation in dialogue to demonstrate interrogation.
