This lesson builds on that knowledge by introducing pupils to social media, its types, advantages, disadvantages, and responsible use.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Many people use mobile phones, tablets, and computers to communicate with others through the internet. They send messages, share pictures and videos, watch educational content, and connect with friends and family using different social media platforms.

In this lesson, pupils will learn the meaning of social media, the different types of social media, its advantages and disadvantages, and how to use social media safely and responsibly.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media are online platforms and applications that allow people to create, share, and exchange information, ideas, pictures, videos, and messages with others through the internet.

Social media helps people communicate, learn, entertain themselves, and connect with friends and family anywhere in the world.

TYPES OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Some common types of social media include:

1. Social Networking Sites – Used to connect with friends and family.

Examples: Facebook, LinkedIn.

2. Photo and Video Sharing Platforms – Used to share pictures and videos.

Examples: Instagram, YouTube.

3. Messaging Applications – Used to send instant messages, pictures, videos, and voice notes.

Examples: WhatsApp, Telegram.

4. Microblogging Platforms – Used to share short messages and updates.

Examples: X (formerly Twitter), Threads.

5. Educational and Discussion Platforms – Used for learning and sharing knowledge.

SUMMARY
