TOPIC – MEANING AND TYPES OF POLLUTION 

LEARNING AREA 

1. Meaning (Types) of Pollution

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. explain the meaning of pollution.

2. mention at least three types of pollution that are common in your locality.

3. mention at least one effect of each of the types.

4. write at least five ways of controlling pollution and its effects.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Photographs and charts showing polluted water, industries letting, fumes into the air.

2. Posters or photographs showing areas affected by oil spillage.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION (POLLUTION) 

Pollution is anything that makes our water, land, air and environment dirty and unsafe to use.

For example, a heap of rubbish is a type of pollution. A dead animal lying on the road causes pollution.

TYPES OF POLLUTION 

1. Air pollution – through smoke

2. Noise – through sound

3. Water pollution – through dirt or industrial waste

5. Land pollution – through dirt or industrial waste.

EFFECTS OF POLLUTION 

WATER POLLUTION

Water pollution has the following effects:

1. It makes water dirty and unfit for drinking.

2. It causes dysentery, typhoid fever and cholera.

AIR POLLUTION 

Air pollution has the following effects:

1. It makes the air dirty and bad for breathing into the body.

2. It causes sneezing, blood poisoning, cough, lung diseases and cold.

NOISE POLLUTION 

Noise, as pollution, has the following effects:

1. It disturbs people’s minds.

2. It prevents them from reasoning properly and thinking creatively.

3. It can also cause headaches and sleeplessness.

LESSON TWO – REMEDY TO THE EFFECTS OF POLLUTION 

1. Industrial waste should be property disposed.

2. Factories and industries should be located far way from where people live.

3. Waste should be properly disposed at home, school and office.

4. Modern toilet facilities should be provided in the house.

5. Dumping site should be regularly cleared.

6. All smoky cars should be ban from the road.

7. Noise should be kept in check.

REVISION AND WEEK 10 LESSON ASSESSMENT 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Shows pictures of polluted water;

Pupil’s Activities – Look at pictures of polluted water and describe what they observe.

3. Arranges for pupils to visit industrial areas and observe the release of effluent waste into the rivers;

Pupil’s Activities – Observe the release of effluent waste into the river.

4. Guides pupils’ discussion on the various ways the community, industries etc. pollute water;

Pupil’s Activities – Visit industrial areas to observe ways industries pollute  water.

5. Guides discussion on measures of controlling.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate in the discussion.

6. Summarize the lesson;

Pupil’s Activities – Note taking.

CONCLUSION

• To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

• Assignment – Find out from home the effect of dust and smoke on people’s lives.
