LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION

Pupil’s Activities 1 – Introduction to Expansion of Numbers

Quantitative Reasoning (Oral)

Sample

10 = 10 + 0

12 = 10 + 1

21 = 20 + 1

36 = 30 + 6

Expand

1. 15 = ____ + ____

3. 19 = ____ + ____

4. 39 = ____ + ____

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities 2 – Using Expansion of Numbers in Addition

Working Examples

1. 5 + 12 = 10 + 5 + 10 + 2

= 10 + 10 + 5 + 2

= 20 + 7

= 27.

2. 25 + 15 = 20 + 5 + 10 + 5

= 20 + 10 + 5 + 5

= 30 + 10

= 40

3. 18 + 11

4. 16 + 13

LESSON FOUR – continue the activities in Lesson 3

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Guides pupils to group the objects into ones, twos, threes and fours to form sum less than 40 e.g. 17 balls and 15 balls give 32 balls.

Pupil’s Activities – Group objects into ones, twos, threes and fours to form sums less than 40 and count the total.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
