By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –
1. explain the meaning of harmful substances.
2. give examples of harmful substances.
3. mention ways of preventing the intake of harmful substances.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. Pupils’ textbooks.
2. Real objects of harmful substances in their environment.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Harmful substances are food, water, fruits or drugs that are unfit for human consumption.
EXAMPLES OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
1. Stale foods
2. Poorly cooked foods
3. Rotten foods
4. Infested foods
5. Expired foods
6. Expired drugs
7. Unripe fruits
8. Impure water.
WAYS OF PREVENTING INTAKE OF HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
1. Avoid eating stale, poorly cooked, dirty and infested foods.
2. Avoid taking expired food and drugs.
3. Take only drugs that are prescribed by the doctor/physician.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Leads the pupils in discussion to discover harmful substances when taken into human body.
2. Takes pupils to local shops and markets to identify harmful substances in their environment.
Pupil’s Activities – Participate in field trip.
3. Asks questions to lead pupils to identify ways of preventing intake of harmful substances.
Pupil’s Activities – Respond to the teacher’s questions.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
