TOPIC: Simple Narrative Composition from Poem or Folktale 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

  1. Use structure of a story in sentences.
  2. Tell a short rally and then in writing.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

  1. Course book
  2. Supplementary readers
  3. Narrative poems
  4. Magazines

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

Narration of events  or stories connected with personal experience. Examples of topics for narrative composition are –

  1. A visit to the hospital, dam factory, zoo, farm, etc.
  2. Narrative poems, folk stories told – The Tortoise and the Magic Drum  A Folktale from Nigeria

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Makes it clear to pupils that a story may be long;
  3. Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the teacher tell a story.
  4. Guides pupils to reproduce the story of a poem – Jack and Jill;
  5. Pupil’s Activities – With teacher’s help reproduce the story of the poem  Jack and Jill. Once upon a time, there was a boy called Jill. Second paragraph,. Continues – they set out to go to the river to fetch pail of water  just one pail, etc.
  6. Encourages them to tell a story along those lines;
  7. Pupil’s Activities – Read other simple poems and reproduce them in the same way. Relate the story of their experiences individually and orally.
  8. Supervises their work. Note – it is expected that by this time, children will have had opportunities of reading and listing to stories.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

  2. Write a simple narrative composition from poem or folktale.
