2. give reasons/importance why farm produce should be preserved.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. Weeviled unpreserved crop
2. Preserved/fresh grains
3. Frozen meat or fish
4. Bottled drink
5. Canned meat, fish, milk, etc.
6. Food items for preservation – meat, fish, grains, cassava, yams, etc.
7. Posters or charts showing the different methods of food preservation e.g. people frying/smoking drying fish.
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
Food preservation is very important before storage because it makes the food last longer.
In order to avoid unnecessary waste of farm products, there is need for preservation during the time of bountiful harvest.
PRESERVATION OF FARM PRODUCE
Preservation of farm produce is the process of keeping farm produce in good condition and from being damaged.
METHOD OF PRESERVING FARM PRODUCTS
To preserve foods, the common methods are,
1. Freezing
2. Smoking
3. Canning
4. Drying
5. Salting
LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVATION
1. It retains the colour, taste and nutritional value.
2. It prolongs shelf life.
3. It reduces loss.
4. It makes farm produce available in area where they are not produced.
5. It helps to protect farm produce from insects and other pests attack.
6. It make farm produce remain good and viable for planting next season.
7. It protects possible contaminated infections from unpreserved food items.
8. It saves money – buying at a cheap price when in season.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Provides grains infested by weevils for the pupils to examine and discuss why the grains are infected.
Pupil’s Activities – State reasons why the grains are infected.
3. Displays different farm crops that needs different methods of preservation for the pupils to identify how best to preserved each of them.
Pupil’s Activities – State how best to preserved different farm products.
4. Leads pupils to the discuss the meaning of farm preservation.
Pupil’s Activities – Explain farm preservation.
5. Asks pupils the state the reason for preserving farm produce.
6. Summary each lesson on the board.
Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – food preservation.
