TOPIC: AGENTS OF SOIL FORMATION

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives – describe the process of soil formation.

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can make a list of agents of soil formation.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Soil samples – sandy, clayey and Loamy, Funnel, Water, Measuring glass, Filter paper, Cotton wool, Pots, Maize grains

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

The process of soil formation is called weathering.

Weathering is the breaking down of rocks into smaller (tiny) particles to form soil.

Soil formation is the break down of rocks into smaller particles to form soil.

Rocks are parent materials through which soils are formed.

Soils are formed by the interaction of the following with the parent materials (rocks) – rain, temperature, wind, man and animals.

PROCESS/EFFECTS OF SOIL FORMATION

1. RAIN

Rainfall helps to wash down different particle from the rocks. The particle decompose and become soil. Also, rainfall on dried plants and dead animals helps to decay to form soil.

2. TEMPERATURE

Temperature is the hotness or coldness of the atmosphere at a particular time. When the weather is hot, the rocks are expanded and contracted when weather is cold. During the expansion and contraction, small particles of rock fall to form soil.

3. WIND

Just like the rain, the wind blows away pieces particles from the rock to form soil.

4. MAN

The activities of man such farming, building, construction, dipping, etc. break rocks into smaller particles.

6. ANIMALS

The activities of different kind of animals such as digging holes, carrying dried plants and dead animals into the holes.

When rainfall, the materials decay to form soil.

7. PLANTS

When soil is formed, plants grow and their roots are deepen inside the soil. When these plants died, the leaves and roots inside the soil decay to form soil.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. Revises the previous lesson based on the previous lesson or pupil’s knowledge.

2. Gets a video on process of soil formation.

3. Plays the video.

4. Leads pupils to describe how each agent responsible for the process of soil formation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the description.

3. Demonstrates how man, animals and plants responsible for the process of soil formation.

Pupil’s Activities – List various activities of man, plants and animals that aids formation of rock.

4. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as instructed.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
  • Next Lesson – Process of Soil Formation

LESSON EVALUATION

Ask pupils to explain the process of soil formation.
