LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. identify materials used for packaging farm produce.

2. give reasons why farm produce are packaged.

3. justify reasons for using some materials for a particular farm produce, for examples – create for eggs, cage for life animals, basket for tomatoes, etc.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify farm produce.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of sample of farm produce or chart showing farm produce.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Farm produce is the crop and other agricultural product produced and sold by farmers.

Examples of farm produce are,

  • Crops – yam, beans, potatoes, maize, etc.
  • Animals – poultry, eggs, goat, cow, etc.
  • Other agricultural products – honey, seeds, fresh cut flowers, etc.

Farm produce can be processed and packaged or packaged directly depending on the nature of the products.

 

 

PACKAGING FARM PRODUCE

Packaging farm produce is the wrapping of farm produce with suitable materials to protect for easy distribution, storage, sale or personal use.

 

PACKAGING MATERIALS 

Materials used for packaging farm produce are,

1. Baskets

2. Cages – live animals

3. Trays or creates

4. Sacks or bags

5. Boxes

6. Polythene bags

7. Plastic containers

 

Note – Guides pupils to analyze and justify the reasons for using the above for a particular product. For examples – create for eggs not basket, basket for tomatoes not sack, etc. 

 

LESSON 2 – REASONS FOR PACKAGING FARM PRODUCE

1. Personal or commercial use.

2. To prevent the food from contamination.

3. To prevent physical damage.

4. To increase sales.

5. To retain the original shape and texture.

6. To maintain freshness of the food.

7. To increase shelf life of the food.

8. To prevent waste.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps – he/she,

1. Revises the previous lesson based on the pupil’s related knowledge or experience.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in lesson review.

2. Displays samples or chart of farm produce.

3. Asks pupils to identify and group as crops and animals farm produce.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and group the samples or contents of the chart as crops or animals.

4. Displays samples or chart of different packaging items for farm produce.

3. Lets pupils identify and describe the use of the packaging items for farm produce.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and describe the use of the packaging items for farm produce.

4. Uses the samples or chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson – packaging farm produce.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to lesson introduction to understand the concept of packaging farm produce.

5. Leads a discussion on the meaning of farm produce with appropriate examples and the materials used for packaging them.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the lesson discussion.

7. Displays chart showing packaging items for different farm produce.

8. Asks pupils to state the reasons why packaging item best for the farm produce.

10. Asks pupils in groups or pairs to list packaging materials, analyze and justify the reasons for each materials.
