CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

People need protection from crime, accidents, fire, and other dangers in their homes, schools, roads, and communities.

Security means protecting people, property, and communities from danger or crime. Security agencies have different duties that help to keep people safe and maintain peace and order.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about the meaning of security, security agents in Nigeria, and the primary duties of different security agencies.

LESSON 1 – MEANING OF SECURITY

Security is the protection of people, property, and the community from danger, harm, or crime.

MEANING OF SECURITY AGENTS

Security agents are people or organisations whose duty is to protect lives and property and maintain peace and safety.

SECURITY AGENCIES IN NIGERIA AND THEIR DUTIES

1. Nigeria Police Force (NPF)

The Nigeria Police Force helps to:

• Prevent and detect crime.

• Protect lives and property.

• Maintain law and order.

• Arrest people suspected of committing crimes.

2. Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)

The NSCDC helps to:

• Protect important national property and infrastructure.

• Assist in maintaining peace and safety.

• Respond to emergencies.

• Help protect communities.

3. Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)

The FRSC helps to:

• Promote road safety.

• Control traffic.

• Educate road users.

• Help reduce road accidents.

4. Nigerian Fire and Rescue Service

The Fire and Rescue Service helps to:

• Rescue people during emergencies.

SUMMARY
