TOPIC – INTRODUCTION TO STORYTELLING 

 

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. develop an understanding about the importance of storytelling.

2. apply the techniques of telling a story.

3. create or make up a short story.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can made up a story from story pictures book.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of stories in a book; Illustrations of characters in the story; Television; Video tapes and CDs.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

INTRODUCTION TO THE ART OF STORYTELLING

Storytelling is the description of social and cultural activity that happened in the past.

 

 

IMPORTANCE/REASONS FOR STORYTELLING

People tell stories for the following reasons –

1. To teach us moral value and lesson.

2. To entertain us.

3. To educate us about our environment.

4. To caution our behaviour.

5. To respect one another.

6. To reserve our culture.

 

 

TECHNIQUES FOR TELLING A STORY

1. Commit yourself to the story and to your audience.

2. Use voice modulation and dramatize.

3. Tell your stories with gestures, body language and movement.

4. Create mental images through descriptions made with all the senses.

5. Use metaphors.

6. Make eye contact with each of your students to emphasize what is important.

7. Encourage interaction through questions.

8. Keep a journal and write down all the stories that come your way.

9. Integrate a group of storytellers to make constructive criticism.

MAKE UP A SHORT STORY

Making up a story line with any one or two of the following themes – tolerance, service to the nation, truthfulness, respect, obedience, etc. Or follow the link to choose stories – Nigerian Fairy Tales, Folk Tales and Fables

 

PRESENTATION 

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Tells a short story.

3. Asks pupils to state the moral lessons of the story.

Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the story and state its importance.

4. Uses the story to explain meaning of storytelling and its importance.

5. Lets the pupils analyze the importance of the short story.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the importance of the short story.

6. Leads a discussion on the techniques of telling a story.

Pupil’s Activities – Illustrate the techniques of telling a story.

7. Organizes the pupils in pairs or group to create a short story.

Pupil’s Activities – Create a short story.

8. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
