CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

A verb is an action word, while an adverb tells us how, when, or where an action is performed.

A verb phrase complement is a group of words that completes the meaning of a verb.

Sometimes, an adverb is followed by to + a verb (infinitive) to complete the meaning of a sentence. These extra words are called verb phrase complements.

A common pattern is: Verb + Adverb + To + Verb (Infinitive)

The infinitive is the base form of a verb preceded by to.

Examples

  • He came early to study.
  • She worked hard to succeed.
  • They arrived quickly to help us.
  • The boy ran fast to catch the bus.
  • We left early to avoid traffic.

In these sentences:

  • early, hard, quickly, fast are adverbs.
  • to study, to succeed, to help, to catch, to avoid are infinitives.
  • The infinitive phrases complete the meaning of the action.

More Examples

  • Mary spoke loudly to attract attention.
  • The pupils listened carefully to understand the lesson.
  • He woke up early to prepare for school.
  • The teacher explained clearly to help the pupils.
  • They practised regularly to improve their skills.

IMPORTANCE OF THE LESSON

This lesson helps pupils to:
