THEME – WATER

PREVIOUS LESSON – REPRODUCTION IN PLANTS II – POLLINATION AND FERTILIZATION (PRIMARY 5)

TOPIC – WATER

LEARNING AREA

1. Water cycle

2. Rain formation

3. Relationship between water cycle and Rain Formation

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1 Explain how rain is formed in the clouds.

2. Draw and explain a diagram of the water cycle.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

Water

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Chart of the water cycle

2. Flash cards with the following words: Evaporation, river and lake, clouds, rain, condensation, cools, heats up.

3. Unlabelled chart of the water cycle

4. Containers for displaying and boiling water.

 5. A cool flat surface.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

WRITING INSTRUCTION

Copy as I write or draw as I draw. This instruction should be given when you need the pupils to write or draw.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTORY QUESTIONS

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils the following questions:

1. Describe rain?

2. When do we have plenty of rain?

3. Where does rain come from?

Pupil’s expected response – Turn and share with one another:

1. What does it look (water), sound (waterfall), feel like (cool or cold)?

2. During the rainy season.

3. From the clouds, the sky.

Teacher’s remark – Give a great cheer for active participation and quick response.

WATER EVAPORATION AND CONDENSATION

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Activities and discussion on water evaporation and condensation.

Teacher –

  • 1. Boil water in an open pot for 5 – 10 minutes.

Pupil’s quick questions –

  • 2. What did you you observe coming out of the pot?

Teacher –

  • 3. Gently place the cover on the pot for 5 minutes and remove the cover gently.

Pupil’s quick question –

  • 4. What do you notice on the inside of the cover?
  • 5. How did the water get there?

Pupil’s response

2. Steam (like a smoke)

4. Water

5. As the water get heated, water rise in form of steam to form water.

Teacher’s remark – This process is called rain formation. In primary 4, we learn about evaporation and condensation. Let the pupils recall the different between evaporation and condensation.

MEANING OF WATER EVAPORATION AND CONDENSATION

Water evaporation is the changing of water into gas.

Condensation is the changing of water vapour into water as rain.

LESSON TWO – MEANING AND DRAWING OF WATER CIRCLE

Teacher’s Activities – Display a chart of water cycle and discus.

Pupil’s response – Active participation.

Teacher’s remark – Give a great cheer for active participation.

On board, copy as I write.

There are three main stages in the water cycle –

1. Evaporation

2. Condensation

3. Precipitation (rain).

Guide pupils to use the key words – evaporation, condensation and rain to draw and discuss water cycle.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Demonstrates how rain is formed.

Pupil’s Activities – Get involved in the demonstration.

3. Guides pupils to recall the different between evaporation and condensation.

Pupil’s Activities – Differentiate between evaporation and condensation.

4. Guides pupils to draw water cycle with the key words.

Pupil’s Activities – Draw and discuss water cycle.

5. Classroom Note – The key meanings and drawing.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
