CONTENT OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
A debate is a formal discussion where people give reasons for or against a particular topic. In a debate, one group supports the motion while another group opposes it.
In this lesson, the pupils will learn how to debate on the topic: “Corporal Punishment Should Not Be Enforced in Schools.”
Corporal punishment means the use of physical force such as caning or flogging to punish a pupil for bad behaviour.
During the debate, pupils will present reasons why corporal punishment should or should not be used in schools.
Points to Remember in a Debate
- Speak clearly and politely.
- Give strong reasons for your opinion.
- Listen carefully to others.
- Use simple and correct English.
Importance of the Lesson
This lesson helps pupils to:
- express their opinions confidently.
- develop speaking and writing skills.
- learn how to argue logically.
- understand discipline in schools.
Pupils should practise giving reasons and examples when supporting or opposing a motion.
Meaning of Key Terms
- Corporal punishment – Physical punishment given to learners for wrongdoing.
- Enforced – Made to be obeyed or carried out.
- Debate – A formal argument for or against a topic.
WRITE DEBATE: Corporal Punishment Should Not Be Enforced in Schools
Good day Mr Chairman, panel of judges, accurate timekeeper, co-debaters, and my fellow pupils.
I stand before you to support the motion which says that corporal punishment should not be enforced in schools.
Firstly, corporal punishment can cause injury and harm to pupils. It is not a safe method of correcting children.
Secondly, it can make pupils afraid of their teachers and reduce their interest in learning. Instead of learning happily, pupils become scared.
Thirdly, there are better ways of correcting children such as counseling, advice, and guidance. These methods help pupils understand their mistakes.
In addition, corporal punishment can affect the relationship between teachers and pupils. It reduces trust and respect in school.
Finally, I strongly believe that schools should use positive discipline instead of physical punishment.
Thank you.
