THEME: NATIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND IDENTITY 

PREVIOUS LESSON – VALUES THAT PROMOTE PEACE – NATIONAL UNITY 

TOPIC: NATIONALISM 

Nationalism is a system created by people who believe their nation is superior to all others. Most often, this sense of superiority has its roots in a shared ethnicity. Sometimes nationalism makes people not want to work with other countries to solve shared problems.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to –

  1. define Nationalism.
  2. state ways of promoting nationalism.
  3. lists any nationalist they know.

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils are required to already have learned national unity, cooperation, values that promote peace, value Nigeria goods, and national honors.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

  1. Pictures
  2. Magazines
  3. Textbook

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

NATIONALISM 

Nationalism is the belief that one’s national culture and interests are superior to any other, and that nations should act independently (rather than collectively) to attain their goals. Also, it is the belief that a people who share a common language, history, and culture should constitute an independent nation, free of foreign domination.

The Nigerian nationalists’ goal of achieving an independent sovereign state of Nigeria was achieved in 1960 when Nigeria declared its independence and British colonial rule ended.

LIST OF TOP NATIONALISTS/PATRIOTISM IN NIGERIA 

  1. Nnamdi Azikiwe was born in 1904. He is the first president of Nigeria and the founder of Nigerian nationalism. He is popularly called ‘Zik’ or ‘Zik of Africa’. Zik helped establish the University of Nigeria after independence in 1962.
  2. Herbert Macaulay was pivotal in Nigeria’s fight to gain independence although he didn’t live to see this become a reality. He also created the National Council of Nigeria and Cameroon in the 1940s along with Nnamdi Azikiwe.
  3. Ahmadu Bello was born in 1919, Ahmadu Bello was another key figure in the country’s fight for independence. He was a school teacher that later became the Premier of the Northern Nigeria.
  4. Anthony Enahoro  is another famous Nigerian personality. He’s well known for his social activism. He’s popularly known as the “Father of the Nigerian State”
  5. Obafemi Awolowo  is another undisputed national hero. He was born in 1909 and was the first Premier of Western Nigeria. Also, he was a one time minister of Finance.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Explains the meaning of Nationalism;
  3. Asks pupils to mention contributions of any nationalist they know;
  4. Pupil’s Activities – Mention the names of some nationalists and their achievements.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
  • Next Lesson – Patriotism

LESSON EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT 

Pupils to:

  1. define Nationalism.
  2. state 3 ways of promoting nationalism.
  3. lists  2 any nationalist they know.
