1. Explain the concept of civil society;

2. Gives examples of civic society groups in Nigeria.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION 

MEANING OF CIVIL SOCIETY 

Civil Society Groups are social organizations which are formed to promote the interests and values of the common citizens.

 

EXAMPLES OF CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS IN NIGERIA

1. CD means Campaign for Democracy.

 

2. CLO means Civic Liberation Organization 

It is the right of a person to do, think and say what they want if this does not harm other people.

 

3.HRW  means Human Rights Watch

It is an international non governmental organization that conducts research and advocacy on human right.

 

4. NADECO means National Democratic Coalition.

 

5. JACON means Joint Action Committee of Nigeria

 

6. Citizens Forum for Constitution Reform

 

7. OPC means Oodua People Congress

 

8. PANDEF means Pan Niger Delta Forum

 

9. NLC means Nigerian Labor Congress

 

10. Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta.

 

11. Other Civil Society Groups are made made up of charity, professional and business associations, clubs, ethnic groups and trade unions.

 

LESSON TWO – WEEKLY ASSESSMENTS 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson – Government Institution in Nigeria. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Leads pupils to explain the concept of civil society groups;

Pupil’s Activities – Participate in the explanation of the definition of civil society groups;

3. Gives examples of such civil society groups in Nigeria;

Pupil’s Activities – List and take down salient points;

Pupil’s Activities – Participate in the discussion and answer relevant questions.

 

CONCLUSION
  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson (functions of civic society groups in the Nigeria).
