CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
MEANING OF COMPUTER NETWORK
Computer network is the sharing of data (information) between a set of connected computers. Also, it is a group of two or more computers connected together so that they can share information, files, and resources such as printers and internet connection. Computer networks are used in schools, homes, offices, banks, hospitals, airports, companies, and government offices to make work easier and faster.
TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORKS
There are different types of computer network,
1. LAN – Local Area Network – This is a computer network that covers a small area. LAN is a set of computers connected together, usually within the same building. It is used in schools, homes, offices. It is easy and cheap to set up. For example, computers connected in one classroom, resident, school, laboratory, office within the same building.
2. MAN – Metropolitan Area Network – This is a computer network that cover a large area like a town or city. It is MAN than LAN but smaller than Wan. For example, network connecting computers in a city like Lagos.
3. WAN – Wide Area Network – This is a computer network that covers a very large area, even different countries. WAN is a world wide network. The Internet is a good example. That’s, internet connection between countries.
4. PAN – Personal Area Network – This is a computer network that covers a very small area. It is used by one person. PAN devices like phones, Bluetooth, or smartwatches. For example, Phone connected to Bluetooth earphones.
IMPORTANCE OF COMPUTER NETWORKS
1. It makes sharing information easy.
2. It saves time and cost.
3. It allows communication between people.
4. It helps schools and offices work faster.
LESSON 2 – COMPUTER NETWORK REQUIREMENTS
Computer network requirements are the things needed to connect computers together so they can share information and resources.
Basic Requirements of a Computer Network
1. Computers – Two or more computers are needed to form a network.
2. Network Cables – It is used to connect computers together. For examples: Ethernet cable, or fibre cable.
3. Network Interface Card (NIC) – It is allows a computer to connect to a network. It can be wired or wireless.
4. Networking Devices – Hub/Switch or Router. Hub/Switch is used connect many computers together while Router is used connect a network to the internet.
5. Internet Connection (Optional) – It is needed if users want to browse the internet.
6. Network Software – It helps computers communicate. For examples: Windows, Linux, or network drivers.
7. Power Supply – Electricity is needed for all network devices.
WHERE COMPUTER NETWORK ARE USED
Computer networks are used in many places to share information, communicate, and work faster. Places where computer networks are used,
1. Schools – It is used for teaching and learning. In classrooms, computer laboratories and offices.
2. Homes – It is used for connecting phones, laptops, smart TVs, and printers.
3. Offices – It is used for sharing files and printers. Also, used for communication between workers.
4. Banks – It is used for online banking and ATM services. Also, to store and share customer information.
5. Hospitals – It is used for keeping patients’ records and to connect doctors and nurses.
6. Airports – It is used for flight booking and information systems.
7. Companies and Factories – It is used managing workers and machines and for data sharing.
8. Government Offices – It is used for record keeping and communication.
LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST)
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups depending on the size of the class.
3. Teacher leads the pupils to the computer room, if available to demonstrate how computer are connected together. Or,
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils understand the importance of computer requirements in connecting computers together.
4. Teacher displays chart showing computers connected together for the pupils to identify and describe the connection between the computers.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and describe the connection between the computers.
5. Teacher uses the chart and the pupils relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a class discussion on the meaning and types of computer networks.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction, understand and explain the meaning and types of computer network in their own term.
6. Teacher uses chart showing computer network requirements to explain their uses and connection.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils understand the important uses of basic requirements used for computer network.
7. Teacher guides the pupils to state places where computer network are used.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and appreciate the uses of the computer network in everyday activities.
8. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.
Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions write as instructed.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson. A computer network is a group of two or more computers connected together to share information and resources such as files, printers, and internet connection. Computer networks make communication faster and easier in places like schools, homes, offices, and banks. Examples of computer networks include LAN, MAN, and WAN. To set up a computer network, you need computers, cables or wireless connection, networking devices, software, and power supply.
