By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to:

1. explain the concept of traditional rulers or traditional leadership;

2. list the duties of a traditional ruler.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

 

1. Charts and pictures of traditional rulers

2. Resources person

3. Other traditional objects, etc.

4. Newspaper cuttings

5. Video clips

 

METHOD OF TEACHING 

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Community leader is someone who represents the interests of the person in the community.

A community leader is a person who guides and directs the affair of the people in his/her community.

He plays the role of protecting his people. Traditional leader is one of the community leaders.

 

TRADITIONAL LEADERSHIP/RULERS 

 

Traditional leadership is the heads of community like a village, town or city.

For examples – Oba, Emir or Eze.

 

LESSON 2 – DUTIES OF TRADITIONAL RULERS 

The duties of the traditional rulers are as follows:

1. To maintain traditional laws and customs of the people.

2. To organized community in self – help projects and festivals.

3.  To settled disputes.

4. To make sure the community is safe.

5. To serve as a link between government and the community.

6. To ensure community development projects.

7. To train the young ones.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Display chart showing traditional leaders.

3. Asks pupils to name traditional leaders in their locality;

Pupil’s Activities – Make a list of traditional rulers in their locality.

4. Explains meaning of a community leader.

 

Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the teacher’s explanation.

5. Invites a community leader in the locality to give a talk on duties of the traditional ruler.

Pupil’s Activities – Listen and state the duties of community leaders.

6. Summary the lesson the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

 

CONCLUSION 

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
