PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. narrate the history and nature of handball in Nigeria.

2. mention the basic handball skills.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Handball balls

2. Handball court

3. Whistle

4. Stop watch

5. Score board

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

HISTORY OF HANDBALL

The Game of handball was introduced to Nigeria in the year1972 by the National Sports Commission (NSC). In this same year, the Handball Association of Nigeria (HAN) was formed. This later became affiliated to the International Handball Federation (IHF).

The Association in Nigeria is currently known as Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN). Nigerian Participation in Handball competitions however started in 1973.

 

NATURE OF HANDBALL 

Handball is a team sport of seven (7) players (including goalkeeper) using their hands to pass a ball with the aim of throwing into the opponent’s goal.

Handball match consists of two periods of 30 minutes in which the team that score most goals wins.

 

BASIC SKILLS IN HANDBALL 

1. Throwing

2. Catching

3. Dribbling

4. Shooting

5. Goal keeping

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Describes the skills of handball.

Pupil’s Activities – Play handball.

3. Explains the rules in handball.

Pupil’s Activities – Apply handball rules.

4. Supervises the pupils.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – rules and regulations of handball.

 

LESSON EVALUATION

Pupils to:

1. narrate the history and nature of handball in Nigeria.

2. mention the basic handball skills.
