TOPIC – CHARACTERISTICS OF DEFICIENCY DISEASES AND FAMILY SIZE AND ITS EFFECT ON NUTRITION 

LEARNING AREA

1. Characteristics of Deficiency Diseases

2. Family Size and Its Effects on Nutrition

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. describe the characteristics of nutritional deficient persons;

2. describe the effects of family size on nutrition.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Samples of food items.

2. Charts/photo graphs showing different kinds of foodstuff.

3. Photographs showing people suffering from nutritional deficiency diseases.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION 

The body needs different vitamins and minerals that are essential for both body development and preventing disease.

 

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF THESE DEFICIENCY DISEASES 

The main causes of nutritional deficiencies include a poor diet that lacks essential nutrients for the body. The effects on the body are:

1. Sickliness

2. Deformity

3. Unstable emotion

4. Impaired growth

5. Partial blindness

 

LESSON TWO – FAMILY SIZE AND ITS EFFECT ON NUTRITION 

A family is a man and a woman living together as husband and wife with their children.

The man is the head of the family, and he is a provider of food, dress, shelter, security, care, education and overall welfare of all members of the family. The woman is to help by preparing food, giving moral training and care to everybody in the family.

To compare family of smaller and large family with the salary structure –

The smaller the size of the family, the better for effective care and adequate provision of food, clothes, care and shelter.

A large family may be compelled to reduce the quantity and quality of everything, including the essential or basic things of life.

In a large family, there may be lack of balanced diets, lack of care, overcrowding and inadequate supply of basic needs.

 

 

REVISION AND WEEK 1 ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Discusses with the pupils characteristics of nutritional deficient;

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss with one another the characteristics of nutritional deficient.

3. Guides the pupils to list the effect of large family size on the nutrition of family members.

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss the effect of large family size on the nutrition of the family.

4. Questions and answers;

Pupil’s Activities – Listen, ask and answer questions.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

 

LESSON EVALUATION 

Pupils to:

1. mention the effects of family size on the available nutrition;

2. list some characteristics of nutritional deficient persons.
