THEME: ARTS AND CRAFTS 

PREVIOUS LESSON – INTRODUCTION TO DANCE

TOPIC – FUNCTIONAL ART 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

  1. identify types of functional art works in the home.
  2. draw diagrams of functional art works in the home.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

  1. Pictures
  2. Real Arts
  3. Pencils
  4. Crayons
  5. Drawing Books

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

INTRODUCTION

MEANING OF FUNCTIONAL ARTS 

A functional art is an artwork that is useful.

Functional artworks are very beautiful and attractive.

It is used mostly in the home.

TYPES OF FUNCTIONAL ART WORKS 

  • WOVEN ITEMS

Woven items are items made with raffia, straw, cotton and palm leaves. They are most at home.

  1. Mats
  2. Caps
  3. Beads
  4. Baskets
  5. Hand fans
  6. Clothing
  7. Cane chair
  8. Cardigan.

  • CARVINGS

Carving items are made from wood.

  1. Walking stick
  2. Mask
  3. Pestle and mortar
  4. Calabash
  5. Drum

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Explains what functional art is.
  3. Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of functional art.
  4. Shows illustrations of different types of functional art works.
  5. Pupil’s Activities – Identify different types of functional art works.
  6. Pupil’s Activities – Draw diagrams and states the uses of functional artworks in the home.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
  • Next Lesson – Singing

LESSON EVALUATION 

Pupils to:

  1. identify functional art works used in the home.
  2. illustrate a functional art work.
  3. apply one colour on the object drawn.
  4. state the uses of different functional artwork.
