THEME: ARTS AND CRAFTS
PREVIOUS LESSON – MEANING OF ARTS
TOPIC – ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ARTS AND DESIGNS
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –
- list elements of design.
- list principles of design.
- state the importance of elements and principles of design.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
- Drawing book
- Illustrations and pictures showing design elements and principles
METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

Every design requires a proper use or application of these elements. The elements of design are –

- Form
- Value
- Colour

Lines are used to –
- Express movement and emotion.
- Creating a good sense of directions.
- Create the shape of objects.
- Colour adds to the beauty of environments.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Principles of design are the rules followed by the designers to create effective communication to their audience.
These rules are ideas and guidelines used to create a meaningful design.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
The principles of design are:
- Balance
- Proportion
- Movement
- Emphasis
- Unity
- Contrast
- Rhythm
- Repetition
IMPORTANCE OF PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Principles are used –
- To understand a work of art.
- To define between parts of an object and its whole.
- To create beautiful designs.
- To draw attention to the points in a design.
- To create unity between the elements of design.
PRESENTATION
- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- Explains the meaning of elements of design.
- Pupil’s Activities – State the elements of design.
- Meaning of principles of design
- Pupil’s Activities – State the principles of design
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
