WRITING INSTRUCTIONS

Copy as I write or draw as I need. This instruction should be given when you need the pupils to write or draw.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION ACTIVITIES 

Teacher’s Activities – Take the pupils to the school’s garden for inspection, call their attention on the growing crops to identify other plants that are growing along and called them UNWANTED PLANTS.

Pupil’s activities and response – Take a walk to the school’s with the teacher, pay attention to him/her and identify plants growing along with the crops as unwanted.

Teacher’s remark – Unwanted plants are known as weed. Ask the pupils, what is weeds? Listen to their definition and give a cheer to quick response. Summary the meaning of weeds on the board.

MEANING OF WEEDS 

Weeds are the unwanted plants.

Weeds are plants that grow where they are not planted and wanted.

Weeds can be grasses, trees, herbs or crops.

IMPORTANCE OF WEEDS 

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils, how can these weed be useful for man and animals. Give them a hints that will enable them to itemised the importance of weeds.

Pupil’s response to questions – Quick response to questions.

Teacher’s remark – Weeds can be grasses, trees, herbs or crops. They are very importance to mankind just as the crops. Itemised the points on the board and give a cheer for quick response to questions.

Weeds are used for –

1. feeding animals.

2. making manure.

3. building houses and making furnitures.

4. firewood

5. support other plants growing, e.g. yam.

6. medication, e.g. herbs.

7. preserving crops.

8. checking erosion.

9. preserving crops.

10. for exchange.

11. some weeds are useful crops.

LESSON 2 – HOW CAN WEEDS BE CONTROLLED? 

Teacher’s Activities – Take the pupils back to the school’s garden to discuss the effects of weeds and recommend possible ways of controlling weeds.

Pupil’s response –

1. Cutting

2. Hoeing

3. Hand picking or uprooting.

4. Allow animals to feed on the weeds.

• This is not recommended without proper controls.

LESSON 3 – WAYS OF PROTECTING THE SOIL AND ENVIRONMENT FROM EROSION AND POLLUTION 

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Discussion on ways of protecting the soil and the environment from erosion.

Erosion is the wasting away of the top soil.

Government make laws to protect the soil and environment. And also, give proper public enlightenment campaign on –

1. Proper waste disposal.

2. Checking soil leaching.

3. Checking the effects of using chemicals to control weeds.

4. Proper control and monitor of animals grazing.
