PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. identify and classify rocks according to colour, hardness, texture, etc.

2. list some important uses of rocks such as construction, beautification, etc.

3. name some major landmark rocks in Nigeria.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Different samples of rocks.

2. Charts showing types of rocks and their uses.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION 

Teacher’s Activities – Take the pupils for a walk within or around the school premise to take sample of soil and rocks (commonly known as stones to differentiate.

Pupil’s response – Differentiate between soil and rocks.

Teacher’s remark – The soil is loose materials while the rock is solid materials. Give a great cheer for quick response and active participation. This week, we are going to be learning about rock – meaning, types and uses of rock.

MEANING OF ROCK

Rock are solid parts of the earth that made up of different materials or minerals.

 

 

When the rock is broken into smaller particle, it formed soil.

WHERE CAN ROCK BE FOUND? 

1. By the road sides.

2. By the bank of rivers and streams.

3. By the beach.

4. On the construction site.

5. Gravel pit, mines and quarries.

 

LESSON TWO – TYPES OF ROCKS 

Teacher’s Activities – Display sample of different types of rock for the pupils to examine and differentiate.

Pupil’s response – Active participation

Teacher’s remark – There are three (3) different types of rock – igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. A great cheer for identifying difference among the rocks.

There are three (3) main types of rock –

1. Igneous rocks – granite

2. Sedimentary rocks – limestone and sandstone

3. Metamorphic rocks – marble

 

LESSON 3 – USES OF ROCKS 

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils, state the uses of rock.

Pupil’s response – Itemise the uses of rock.

Teacher’s remark – Note all pupil’s point on the board and give a great cheer for active contribution. State other uses of rock not able to mentioned by them.

Rocks are also used for the following purposes:

1. Building houses.

2. Constructing bridges, roads and railways.

3. Producing cement.

 

 

4. Producing paper.

5. Making insecticides

6. Manufacturing petrochemicals.

7. Making glass

8. Coating some types of chewing gums, etc.

 

THE MAJOR LANDMARK OF ROCKS IN NIGERIA 

Teacher’s Activities – Ask the pupils to display ₦100 note if they have. Make some available for group or individual examination. Ask them to examine the rock and state the name of rock.

Pupil’s response – Zuma rock.

Teacher’s remark – Zuma rock is one of the major landmark covered by rock in Nigeria. A great cheer for quick response.

Landmark rocks are areas covered by rocks. Areas covered by rocks in Nigeria are –

1. Zuma rock in Niger State

2. Olumo rock in Abeokuta

3. Aso rock in Abuja. It is also known as Villa Rock

4. Riyom rock in Plateau State

5. Wade rock in Plateau State

 

A trip or excursion to one of the major landmark rocks in Nigeria, if possible.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Guides pupils to – classify rocks and state the major uses of rocks.

Pupil’s Activities – Collect, observe and classify rocks on the basis of colour, shape hardness and State some important uses of rocks.

3. Gives examples of major landmark e.g. Rocks in Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify the Zuma rock ₦100 note.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
