By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

2. state the consequences of drug abuse.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Charts showing various drugs.

2. Posters showing different alcohol and tobacco.

3. Samples of herbal medicine.

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

A drug is any substance that can change the activities of the body.

Some of these substances can make us sleepy, excited, awake or take away pains.

 

There are drugs that capable of affecting the mind, emotions, and behavior.

Among these drugs are alcohol and tobacco which are used excessively.

Drug use can be normally use or abuse.

 

COMMON DRUGS

Examples of common drug are aspirin, paracetamol, chloroquine, etc.

 

 

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF DRUG ABUSE

Drug abuse is the wrong use of drugs to get self drive.

Drugs used this ways are not prescribed by doctors, nurses or pharmacists.

The best way to use a drug is according to the doctor’s prescription.

For examples, I – I – I, I – I or I , II – II – II or II – II or II, etc.

  • I – I – I means one in the morning, one in the afternoon and I in the night.
  • II – II – II means 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 2 in the night.

 

EXAMPLES OF DRUG COMMONLY ABUSED 

Commonly abused drugs in Nigeria are tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, amphetamine, heroin, diazepam, codeine, cough syrup, tramadol, Indian hemp, morphine, heroin, etc.

 

CONSEQUENCES OF DRUG ABUSE 

The consequences of drug abuse are drug abuse are follows:

1. It gives pleasurable feelings or desires that encourage the tendency to use again and again.

2. It leads to development of tolerance to drugs.

3. It reduces sense of pain.

 

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher displays sample of drugs such vitamin C and paracetamol.

3. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs to identify and describe drugs.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and describe drug in their own term.

4. Teacher uses the sample of drugs to introduce the lesson – drug use and abuse.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of drug.

5. Teacher leads discussion on the meaning of drug with examples.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of drug with examples of common drug in their community.

6. Teacher displays a chart showing a doctor, nurse and pharmacy.

7. Teacher lets pupils identify and describe importance of doctor, nurse and pharmacy in their community.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify some of the people that works in the hospital or pharmacy and describe their work.

8. Teacher gets a pack of drug with description (as prescribed by the physician) for pupils to read.

9. Teacher uses their relevant responses in activity 7 and 8 to introduce and discuss the meaning of drug use and drug abuse.

Pupil’s Activities – Differentiate between drug use and drug abuse.

10. Teacher leads pupils in groups or pairs to discuss the consequences of drug abuse.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the class discussion.

11. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

 

 

LESSON EVALUATION 

Teacher asks pupils to:

1. explain the meaning of drug.

2. differentiate between drug use and drug abuse with appropriate illustrations or examples.

3. state 10 common drugs in their community.

4. who is a doctor, nurse and pharmacist.

5. mention 5 consequences of drugs use.

6. explain the following prescription by the doctor or pharmacist:

  • I – I – I daily
  • I – I daily
  • II – II daily
  • III daily
  • II – II – II daily
