By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –
1. explain the meaning of apprenticeship.
2. discuss the types of apprenticeship.
3. state some trades where traditional apprenticeship system is practiced.
4. mention the objectives of apprenticeship system.
5. describe the attitudes needed for acquiring apprenticeship training.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
Apprenticeship is a traditional system of training a person to learn an art, trade or job by experience under the skilled or professional worker.
TYPES OF APPRENTICESHIP
There are different types of traditional apprenticeship in Nigeria,
1. Father – Son Apprenticeship
2. Mother – Daughter Apprenticeship
3. Master Craftsmanship/Apprenticeship
4. Master Trade Apprenticeship
1. FATHER – SON APPRENTICESHIP
Father – son apprenticeship is the traditional apprenticeship that is mainly for the male(s) in the family.
An outsider may not be accepted.
2. MOTHER – DAUGHTER APPRENTICESHIP
Mother – son apprenticeship is the traditional apprenticeship that is mainly for the female(s) in the family.
An outsider may not be accepted.
3. MASTER CRAFT APPRENTICESHIP
Master craft apprenticeship is the traditional apprenticeship where people learn the art of making useful and beautiful things by hands.
When you make things such as hand fan, basket, mat, etc. with your hands, it is called craft.
Craft apprenticeship is open for anyone.
4. MASTER TRADE APPRENTICESHIP
Master trade apprenticeship is the traditional apprenticeship where people learn the art of buying and selling goods and services.
It is open to anybody.
Each type of apprenticeship is designed to enables the apprentices to learn how to minimize costs and maximize profits.
LESSON 2 – TRADE WHERE APPRENTICESHIP SYSTEM IS PRACTICED
Some of the trades where apprenticeship system is practiced are as follows:
1. Tailoring
2. Jewelry making
3. Mechanic work
4. Blacksmithing
5. Tye and Dye
6. Barbing
7. Hairdressing
8. Weaving
9. Painting
10. Pottery
11. Capentary
12. Building
13. Catering
14. Nursing
15. Missionary
16. Cobbler
17. Business, etc.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF APPRENTICESHIP
The aims and objectives of apprenticeship are as follows:
1. To equal the young ones with useful skills.
2. To build self confidence in the young ones.
3. To minimize cost and maximize profits.
4. To train the young ones who cannot cope with western education.
5. To train the school leavers.
LESSON 3 – ATTITUDES NEEDED FOR ACQUIRING APPRENTICESHIP SKILLS
The attitudes needed for acquiring apprenticeship skills are as follows:
1. Hard work
2. Commitment
3. Self discipline
4. Good communication skills
5. Endurance
6. Good customer relations
7. Patience for quality production
8. Respect
9. Honesty
10. Determination to succeed
APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING
Teacher organizes a short training on any trades or crafts.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.
3. Teacher displays sample some of the craft products or chart if the real objects are not available.
4. Teacher lets the groups or pairs to identify and discuss how some of the products are made. Note – some of the pupils are already an apprentice.
5. Teacher asks pupils to discuss how to become professional in some of the items.
Pupil’s Activities – Discuss how to become a professional apprentice.
6. Teacher uses the above activities to introduce the lesson and leads a discussion on the meaning and types of traditional apprenticeship system.
Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson and to participate actively in the discussion on the meaning and types of traditional apprenticeship system.
7. Teacher guides the groups or pairs to make a list of trades where traditional apprenticeship is practiced.
Pupil’s Activities – State some of the trades where traditional apprenticeship is practiced in their communities.
8. Teacher leads a discussion on the objectives of traditional apprenticeship system.
Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the objectives of traditional apprenticeship system in their communities.
9. Teacher guides pupils to discuss some of the attitudes needed to become professional apprentices.
Pupil’s Activities – State and discuss the necessary attitudes needed to become professional apprentices.
10. Teacher summarizes each of the lesson on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation and assignment.
Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding to the questions and write as instructed.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
LESSON EVALUATION
Teacher asks pupils to,
1. state the definition of apprenticeship.
2. list any 4 types of apprenticeship.
3. list any 5 aims and objective of apprenticeship.
4. state five 5 attitudes needed for acquiring apprenticeship training.
5. mention 10 trades where apprenticeship is practiced.
