TOPIC – PRONUNCIATION OF VOWELS AND DIPHTHONGS

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most the pupils should be able to,

1. produce vowel sounds and diphthongs correctly, and

2. distinguish between vowels and diphthongs by pronouncing them correctly in words and in sentence contexts.

The pupils can separate vowel and consonant letters.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

INTRODUCTION

A monophthong is a single vowel and a diphthong is a double vowel. That’s, a monophthong is where there is one vowel sound in a syllable, while a diphthong is where there are two vowel sounds in a syllable.

 

 

PRONUNCIATION OF MONOPHTHONGS VOWELS 

a as in ant, apple, etc.

e as in egg, elephant, etc.

i as in ink, insect, etc.

o as in ocean, oar, etc.

u as in uncle, umbrella, etc.

 

 

PRONUNCIATION OF DIPHTHONGS – /ɔi/ and /eə/

/ɔi/ as in boy, toy, enjoy, annoy, soil, foil, boil, ploy, etc.

/eə/ as in air, hair, pair, fair, wear, etc.

PRODUCTION OF VOWELS AND DIPHTHONGS IN WORDS AND IN SENTENCES 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes on the pupils into groups depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays charts or pictures of words with single and double vowels.

4. Teacher uses flashcards to guide pupils to match with the charts displayed and pronounce.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils match the flashcards with the words on the chart and pronounce correctly.

5. Teacher uses the charts and the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson, demonstrates and guides pupils to pronounce the words containing the vowels and the diphthongs.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand words that continue monophthong and diphthong vowels.

6. Teacher guides pupils to understand and differentiate between monophthong and diphthong vowels.

Pupil’s Activities – With appropriate examples, the pupils differentiate between monophthong and diphthong vowels.

7. Teacher dictates words for the pupils to identify and state if it monophthongs or diphthongs.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and state words with monophthong and diphthong vowels.

8. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participates actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to most of the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

Teacher asks pupils to:
