CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Soccer is the most popular game in the world and it’s popularly known as football.

Football is considered a game played by two teams of eleven (11) players on each side, using a round ball, which the players kick up and down on the playing field or any playing space.

A standard football game lasts for ninety (90) minutes; these ninety minutes can make a world of difference in the lives of many.

HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF SOCCER

The Nigeria Football Federation (formerly known as Nigeria Football Association until 2008) is Nigeria’s football governing body. It was formally launched in 1945 and formed the first Nigerian national football team in 1949.

It joined Confederation of African Football (CAF) in 1959 and Federation of International Football Association (Fifa) in 1960. The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) headquarters is located in the city of Abuja.

As of 2008 it organises three leagues: The Nigerian Premier League, the Amateur League and the Women’s League, and five competitions, including the Federation Cup and Women’s Cup.

LESSON 2 – FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENTS IN SOCCER GAME

The facilities and equipment in a football game are:

A. The Football Pitch 

Position of players on the football pitch are –

1. Goalkeeper

5. Centre halfback

6. Right halfback

APPLICATION OF THE RULES AND REGULATION GOVERNING THE GAMES

These are some of the major rules and regulations of the game:

1. Offside

A player is in offside position when he is behind the last defender of his opponent.

 

2. Throw-in

Throw-in comes into the game when the ball is either kicked or travels completely outside the field.

Throw-in means to catch the ball with both the hands behind the head and throw it inside the field.

3. The yellow card rules

The yellow card is issued to the players by the referee when a player disregard the rules of the game or commits a mistake.

The first yellow is called warning and second card is accomplished by red card.

Reason for yellow card are disregarding rules and regulations of the game, playing dangerously, shooting the ball intentionally, wasting time of playing and so on.

 

4. The red card rules

The red card is given directly depending on the offense or when a player is shown the yellow card twice.

Reasons for red card are kicking intentionally, jumping over player, hitting, charging, pushing, holding or handing the ball incorrectly.

 

5. Free kick

There are two types of free kicks:

• Direct kick – ball is kick directly into the goal and no need to passed or touched by the teammate.

• Indirect kick – ball must be passed or touched by the teammate who kicks it before scoring a goal.

6. The rules of penalty kick

Penalty is awarded when a player committed a foul in his own penalty box.

All players must stand in line outside the penalty area except the goalkeeper.

The ball is played on penalty spot before the kick.

 

7. Corner kick

Corner kick is play on the angle 90 degrees arc of the field. It is give when a ball is played, touched or hit over the goal line by a teammate.

8. Goal kick

A goal kick is given when a ball goes over the goal line by the attacking team, not into the goal post. It is played by the goalkeeper or defender.

For the pupil’s note, give them the key points as you discuss the football rules and regulations.

LESSON 3 – OFFICIALS OF THE GAMES AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

1. REFEREE

The referee is the person empowered to enforce the laws during the game of play.

 

2. LINESMAN

Linesman are two assistant referees empowered to assist the main referee during game of play.

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions; then, the teacher –

3. Discusses and demonstrates the basic skills and techniques of the game.

• Watch teacher’s demonstration of various skills.

• Practice the skills.

4. explains the various rules and regulation governing the soccer game.

Student’s Activities – Apply the various skills and techniques to game situation (class inter-group competitions).

5. draws and court/pitch with their dimensions.

Student’s Activities – Draw and label a soccer pitch.

6. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Student’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

3. detect two fouls in soccer.

4. list three essential officials of soccer game mentioned above.
