PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most of the students should have attained the following objectives –

1. State major crop husbandry practices.

2. Grow at least one representative crop from each of the following groups:

  • Cereals
  • Pulses
  • Roots and tubers
  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Beverages and spices
  • Oil, latex and  fibre.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

INTRODUCTION

Crop husbandry is the cultivation and production of edible crops for food.

 

REQUIREMENTS/APPROVED HUSBANDRY PRACTICES 

1. Botanical name and local/common names of the crop.

Name of crop – maize

Botanical name – Zea mays

 

2. Varieties/types.

 

 

3. Climatic and soil requirement.

 

4. Land preparation

 

5. Method of propagation, planting date, seed rate spacing, sowing depth and nursery requirement.

 

6. Cultural practices, supplying, thinning, manuring and fertilizer applications, weeding, pests and diseases.

 

7. Harvesting processing and storage of the selected  crops.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions; then, the teacher –

2. Supervises cultivation of crops suited to local environment.

 

 

Student’s Activities – Cultivation of crops and keeping of appropriate farm records.

3. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Student’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

Ask students to:

1. List major husbandry practices.

 

 

2. Carry out approved husbandry practices leading to the production of a least one representative from each crop groups.

3. Prepare and present records of farm activities involved in growing chosen crops.
