CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Everyone wants to stay safe at home, in school, on the road, and in the community. However, accidents, dangerous situations, and unsafe encounters can happen when people do not follow safety rules.

General safety rules are simple instructions that help us avoid danger, injury, and harm. We can protect ourselves by staying alert, avoiding unsafe situations, being careful around strangers, protecting our bodies, and following basic safety precautions.

In this lesson, pupils will learn about personal safety rules, stranger safety, body safety, and basic safety precautions.

MEANING OF GENERAL SAFETY RULES

General safety rules are simple instructions that help people avoid danger, injury, and harm and keep themselves and others safe.

1. Personal Safety Rules

Personal safety rules are guidelines that help us protect ourselves from danger.

These include:

  • Always stay alert and pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Avoid dangerous places and situations.
  • Follow safety rules at home, in school, and on the road.
  • Do not play with fire, electrical appliances, or dangerous objects.
  • Keep personal belongings safe.
  • Do not share private information carelessly.
  • Report anything suspicious or dangerous to a trusted adult.
  • Walk carefully and obey traffic rules.

Example: A pupil who follows safety rules and reports a dangerous situation to a teacher is practising personal safety.

2. Stranger Safety

A stranger is a person whom you do not know personally. Children should be careful when dealing with strangers.

Stranger Safety Rules:

  • Do not follow strangers.
  • Do not accept gifts, food, or money from strangers without permission from a trusted adult.
  • Do not enter a stranger’s vehicle.
  • Do not tell strangers your home address, school details, phone number, or passwords.
  • Stay close to trusted adults in public places.
  • If a stranger makes you feel unsafe, move away and tell a trusted adult.
  • Never keep a frightening or threatening encounter with a stranger secret.

Example: A child who refuses to enter an unknown person’s vehicle and immediately tells a parent is practising stranger safety.

3. Body Safety

Body safety means protecting our bodies from harm, inappropriate touching, and unsafe situations.

Body Safety Rules

  • Know that your body belongs to you.
  • Do not allow anyone to touch private parts of your body inappropriately.
  • Say “No” and move away if someone makes you uncomfortable.
  • Tell a trusted adult if someone touches you inappropriately or asks you to keep such touching a secret.
  • Respect other people’s bodies and personal space.
  • Do not touch another person’s private parts.
  • Seek help if you feel unsafe or threatened.

Example: A child who moves away and tells a trusted adult when someone touches them inappropriately is practising body safety.

BASIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Basic safety precautions are simple actions we take to prevent accidents and injuries.

1. At Home

  • Keep floors and stairways clear.
  • Keep medicines and chemicals away from children.
  • Do not play with matches or fire.
  • Switch off electrical appliances when they are not in use, with adult guidance.
  • Do not touch electrical wires or sockets with wet hands.

2. At School

  • Walk instead of running in crowded areas.
  • Follow teachers’ instructions.
  • Do not push or fight other pupils.
  • Handle school equipment carefully.
  • Report dangerous objects or situations to a teacher.

3. On the Road

  • Use a safe place to cross the road.
  • Look carefully before crossing.
  • Obey traffic signs and rules.
  • Do not play on the road.
  • Use pedestrian crossings where available.

4. In the Community

  • Avoid isolated or dangerous places.
  • Stay with trusted people when necessary.
  • Report suspicious activities.
  • Follow community safety rules.
  • Cooperate with responsible adults and security personnel.

IMPORTANCE OF GENERAL SAFETY RULES

General safety rules help us to:

1. Prevent accidents and injuries.

2. Protect our lives and health.

3. Avoid dangerous situations.

4. Protect our belongings.

5. Know what to do when faced with danger.

6. Promote safety at home, school, and in the community.

7. Encourage responsible behaviour.

REMINDER:

  • A pupil who walks instead of running on a slippery floor is following a personal safety rule.
  • A child who does not follow a stranger or enter a stranger’s vehicle is practising stranger safety.
  • A child who says no and tells a trusted adult when someone makes them uncomfortable is practising body safety.
  • A pupil who looks carefully before crossing the road is following a basic safety precaution.

General safety rules help us protect ourselves and others from danger. Children should follow personal safety rules, be careful with strangers, protect their bodies, and practise basic safety precautions at home, in school, on the road, and in the community.
