CONTENT OF THE LESSON

INTRODUCTION

Aural discrimination is the ability to hear and differentiate between speech sounds.

Vowel sounds are speech sounds produced when the mouth is open and the air flows freely without obstruction.

In this lesson, pupils will learn two important vowel sounds:

  • /ʌ/ sound
  • /æ/ sound

The /ʌ/ Sound

The /ʌ/ sound is a short vowel sound. It is found in words where the mouth is slightly open and relaxed.

Examples:

  • cup
  • sun
  • bus
  • run
  • fun

Sentences Practice

  • I drink from a cup.
  • The sun is bright.
  • The bus is here.

The /æ/ Sound

The /æ/ sound is also a short vowel sound. It is produced with the mouth more open than /ʌ/.

Examples:

  • cat
  • bag
  • man
  • hat
  • apple

Sentence Practice

  • The cat is black.
  • I have a bag.
  • The man is tall.

Minimal Pairs

  • cup – cap
  • cut – cat
