LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. Explain what changes in plants mean.
2. Identify different changes that occur in plants.
3. Mention conditions needed for changes in plants.
4. State how changes in plants affect people’s lives.
5. Describe simple examples of plant changes.
ENTRY BEHAVIOUR
Pupils have previously learned about living things, especially plants, and how plants grow from seeds.
This lesson builds on that knowledge by helping pupils understand that plants undergo different stages of change, need certain conditions to grow, and that these changes are important because they affect people’s lives positively.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. Real plants or leaves
2. Pictures of seed germination and plant growth
3. Watering can
4. Soil samples
5. Charts showing plant life cycle
6. Whiteboard and marker/chalkboard and chalk
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
Plants are living things that grow, develop, and change over time. These changes are part of the plant life cycle.
Importance of the Lesson
This lesson helps pupils to:
- Understand how plants change and grow.
- Identify conditions needed for plant growth.
- Explain the importance of plants to humans.
- Appreciate the value of plants in the environment.
- Improve knowledge of basic science concepts.
In this lesson, pupils will learn about changes in plants, the conditions needed for these changes, and how plants affect human life.
LESSON 2 – CHANGES IN PLANTS
Changes in plants include the stages a plant passes through from seed to maturity. These stages are germination, growth, flowering, and fruiting.
1. Germination of seeds – This is the process where a seed begins to grow into a new plant.
2. Growth of plants – This is the gradual increase in size and development of a plant from a seedling to a mature plant.
3. Flowering – This is the stage when a plant produces flowers.
4. Fruiting – This is the stage when flowers develop into fruits containing seeds.
5. Drying or withering of plants – This is the stage when a plant becomes weak, dries up, and eventually dies.
CONDITIONS FOR CHANGES IN PLANTS
For plants to grow well and change properly, they need certain conditions such as water, sunlight, air, soil, and suitable temperature.
1. Water – helps seeds to germinate and plants to grow
2. Sunlight – helps plants make food
3. Air – provides carbon dioxide needed by plants
4. Soil – provides nutrients and support
5. Good temperature – helps plant growth
LESSON 3 – HOW CHANGES IN PLANTS AFFECT PEOPLE’S LIFE
Plants are very important because their changes affect human life in many ways, such as providing food, oxygen, medicine, and materials for use.
1. Plants provide food such as fruits, vegetables, and grains.
2. Plants provide medicine for treating diseases.
3. Plants give us oxygen to breathe.
4. Plants are used for building materials and furniture.
5. Plants provide income for farmers and traders.
CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK/TEST QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
A. Answer the Questions.

SUMMARY
Plants are living things that grow and change over time. These changes are called changes in plants. Plants change from seeds to mature plants through different stages.
Pupils learned that plants change as they grow from seeds to mature plants. They also learned the conditions needed for plant growth and how plants affect human life positively.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. The teacher displays a plant (or picture of a plant) and asks pupils:
- What is this?
- How does a plant grow?
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils respond orally.
2. The teacher explains that plants are living things that grow and change over time.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils listen attentively.
3. The teacher introduces the topic: Changes in Plants.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils repeat the topic.
4. The teacher explains the stages of plant changes such as:
- seed germination
- growth
- flowering
- fruiting
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils mention the stages after the teacher.
5. The teacher shows charts or pictures of plant life cycle.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils observe carefully.
6. The teacher explains the conditions needed for plant changes:
- water
- sunlight
- air
- soil
- good temperature
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils identify and repeat the conditions.
7. The teacher asks pupils how plants affect human life.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils give answers such as food, medicine, and oxygen.
8. The teacher writes key points on the board for pupils to copy.
Pupils’ Activities: The pupils copy into their notebooks.
9. The teacher asks oral questions to check understanding.
