LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

 

1. describe the keyword.

2. identify the uses of keyboard.

3. identify computer keyboard shortcut keys.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify and describe the computer keyboard.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Keyboard is an input device used to input data for processing and results.

 

 

SECTIONS OF COMPUTER KEYBOARD 

The keyboard is divided into five sections: 
1. Alphanumeric keys
2. Function keys 

3. Numeric keypad 

4. Control keys

5. Cursor keys

 

1. ALPHANUMERIC KEYS 

Alphanumeric keys are made of alphabets (A – Z), numbers (0 – 9) and special characters (, @#+=%(){}[]£€¥ etc.).

 

2. FUNCTION KEYS

Function keys are used in operating system and application programs. These functions are from F1 to F2. 

 

3. NUMERIC KEYPAD 

Numeric keypad are the keys that have the same arrangement as calculator.

It is on the right hand side of the keyboard and not in most keyboards. 

 

4. CONTROL KEYS 

Control keys are on different positions on the keyboard.

They include home, page up, page, down, end, pause, insert, delete, shift, space bar, enter, tap, caps lock, escape (ESC), alternate (Alt), control (ctrl), print screen.

 

5. CURSOR KEYS 

Cursor keys are arrow keys (left, right, up and down on the keyboard) used to move the cursor around the screen. 

 

 

LESSON 2 – COMPUTER KEYBOARD SHORTCUT KEYS

A computer keyboard shortcut is a set of one or more keys that make a command in software or an operating system.

 

BASIC COMPUTER KEYBOARD KEY(S) AND THEIR FUNCTIONS 

1. Alt + F, File menu options in the current program.

2. Alt+E, Open Edit options in the current program.

3. Alt+Tab, Switch between open programs.

4. F1, View help information (F1 is used by almost every Windows program to display help).

5. F2, Rename a selected file.

6. F5, Refresh the current program window.

6. Ctrl+D, Bookmark the current page in most Internet browsers.

7. Ctrl+N, Create a new or blank document in some software, or open a new tab in most Internet browsers.

8. Ctrl+O, Open a file in the current software.

9. Ctrl+A, Select all text.

10. Ctrl+B, Change selected text to be bold.

11. Ctrl+I, Change selected text to be in italics.

12. Ctrl+U, Change selected text to be underlined.

13. Ctrl+F, Open find window for current document or window.

14. Ctrl+S, Save current document file.

16. Shift+Del, Cut selected item.

17. Ctrl+C, Copy selected item.

18. Ctrl+Ins, Copy selected item.

22. Ctrl+K, Insert hyperlink for the selected text.

23. Ctrl+P, Print the current page or document.

24. Home, Go to the beginning of the current line.

25. Ctrl+Home, Go to the beginning of the document.

26. End, Go to the end of the current line.

27. Ctrl+End, Go to the end of the document.

28. Shift+Home, Highlight from the current position to the beginning of line.

 

29. Shift+End, Highlight from the current position to the end of line.

30. Ctrl+Left, arrow Move one word to the left at a time.

31. Ctrl+Right Arrow, Move one word to the right at a time.

32. Ctrl+Esc, Open the Start menu.

33. Ctrl+Shift+Esc, Open Windows Task Manager.

34. Alt+F4, Close the currently active program.

35. Alt+Enter, Open the properties for the selected item (file, folder, shortcut, etc.).

36. Windows key+L, Lock the computer, requiring password entry to access again.

37. Windows key+X, Access the Power User Tasks Menu in Windows 8 and Windows 10.

38. Windows key+Down Arrow, Minimize the active program window.

39. Windows key+Up Arrow, Maximize the active program window.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size and available functional computers.

3. Teacher asks pupils to identify and describe the computer keyboard.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and discuss different sections of the computer keyboard.

4. Teacher uses the group’s or pair’s description to introduce the lesson and lead a discussion on the computer keyboard.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of lessons.

5. Teacher gives the groups or pairs some commands to perform on their computer and discuss. For example, press ctrl A, C, V and Z.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the result of the commands given to the computer.

6. Teacher uses the group’s or pair’s activities in step 5 to introduce and discuss basic computer keyboard shortcut keys with appropriate hands-on activities.

 

Pupil’s Activities – Take part in the lesson discussions and hands on activities.

7. Teacher summarizes each of the lesson on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – special keys.
